Pete Hegseth, Trump’s cabinet pick for Secretary of Defense, faced tough questioning from the senators during his confirmation hearing on Tuesday. Hegseth received praise on social media for his ability to withstand the hostile and often personal nature of the attacks launched by Democratic senators during the hearing.
Hegseth held his ground regarding his his anti-woke stances on military policy. He also affirmed a Trump campaign promise on a key issue.
When asked about issues of discrimination, Hegseth pointed out the past discrimination against those who refused the Covid vaccine. Hegseth expressed an opinion consistent with President-elect Trump that former members who had been released from duty due to the vaccine should be reinstated and repaid.
Conservative influencers including Riley Gaines tweeted approval of Hegseth’s response.
“Tens of thousands of service members who were kicked out because of an experimental vaccine, in President Trump’s defense department they will be apologized to, the will be reinstituted with pay and rank,” Hegseth said.
The comments from Hegseth align with comments made by Trump on the campaign trail regarding service members who were released for refusing the Covid vaccine.
Following the strong performance by Hegseth during the hearings, key Senate Republicans including Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, have indicated they will support his nomination in the upcoming vote.
Trump has previously spoken out on his support of Pete Hegseth’s nomination as Secretary of Defense following rumors that a new nominee could be named.
Trump shared the statement on Truth Social Friday morning following a week of media attacks against Hegseth.
“Pete Hegseth is doing very well. His support is strong and deep, much more so than the Fake News would have you believe. He was a great student – Princeton/Harvard educated – with a Military state of mind,” Trump wrote.
“He will be a fantastic, high energy, Secretary of Defense Defense, one who leads with charisma and skill. Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” he added.
