The House impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday night. This makes him the first cabinet member in over a century to be impeached.

According to the AP News, the impeachment was determined by a one-vote lead, with 214 House members voting to punish Mayorkas for not enforcing U.S. immigration laws versus the 213 House members who did not support the action.

Breitbart reported on this historic impeachment, noting that the last cabinet member to be reprimanded by the house was Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War, William Belknap, in 1876.

Nearly 150 years ago, Belknap refused to resign amid controversy and was acquitted by the Senate, but that stain on his record remains as it will do so for Mayorkas regardless of what the Senate does in this modern case, per Breitbart

America First House Republicans celebrated the win and posted about the situation on X.

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., wrote, “To all families who have lost a loved one due to Joe Biden’s man-made border crisis, we have answered the call: Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas has been IMPEACHED.”

“House Republicans stand with the American people to ensure everything that can be done, will be done to SECURE OUR NATION,” he added.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.,  stated, “After months of hard work, the House has finally impeached Secretary Mayorkas for his dereliction of duty & inviting the invasion of America.”

She noted, “To the Senate: the American people demand you uphold your oath & hold a trial and remove Mayorkas for breaking federal law.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., released a statement noting that the impeachment investigation took nearly a year and a half.

He noted that “Secretary Mayorkas willfully and consistently refused to comply with federal immigration laws, fueling the worst border catastrophe in American history.”

“He has undermined public trust through multiple false statements to Congress, obstructed lawful oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, and violated his oath of office,” he continued.

Johnson concluded that the impeachment was necessary and “Alejandro Mayorkas deserves to be impeached.”
