A potential jail sentence levied by Judge Juan Merchan in July would not stop President Donald Trump from running for reelection, his lawyer and spokesperson has confirmed.
In a recent interview with BBC One, Trump lawyer Alina Habba reminded host Laura Kuenssberg that it was “not posturing by any means” to state that the justice system in America was corrupt.
While speaking about the overwhelming 34 felony count conviction in a New York court just last week, Habba noted, “Donald Trump is the victim of criminal, selective prosecution.”
The president’s sentencing is scheduled for July 11, 2024. The sentencing will take place just days before he formally accepts the Republican presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
“He is running for president – nothing will change that,” Habba stated in her interview, addressing the possibility of Trump being sentenced to jail time.
In the NYC “hush money” case, the charges that the president is facing each carry a maximum sentence of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Upon appeal, Trump’s legal team expects to have the verdict overturned, but on the slim chance that the appeal falls flat, Habba insisted that Trump would never stop fighting.
She also pointed out that the support for Trump’s campaign was higher than ever, adding that Americans were “speaking up because they’re afraid, because we cannot have this happen to us!”
President Trump’s conviction in New York has only fueled his bid to reclaim the White House. In May alone, his campaign announced that he raised, along with the RNC, $141 million. Added to the tens of millions raised immediately after the guilty verdict in New York, Trump has raked in a whopping total of $300,000,000 million.
Previously, Alina Habba had commented that potential jailtime in the president’s future would simply make him stronger. She remarked in April, “I think, like anybody, he’s concerned about going to jail. But if they put him in jail for his First Amendment right, he will be like Nelson Mandela. I mean, that would be just absurd. And frankly, they’ll win him the election.”
