The judge who threw out special counsel Jack Smith’s classified documents case against President Donald Trump was assigned the case of the suspect in the second assassination attempt against him.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon was randomly selected from a drawing of 10 federal judges, according to Politico.
Routh, 58, was originally charged with two gun-related crimes. He now faces five counts, including the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer and another gun charge.
The maximum sentence in the charges could include up to life in prison.
Routh was arrested on Sept. 15 after fleeing the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. A Secret Service agent reportedly spotted the barrel of a rifle and opened fire while other agents covered the president.
The suspect was found with a scope-mounted rifle, two backpacks and a GoPro camera when apprehended along I-95 by local law enforcement.
Later research found that Routh had traveled from North Carolina to Florida a month earlier. He reportedly waited near the golf course fence for approximately 12 hours ahead of the incident.
Routh was held in detention on Monday where a letter was revealed concerning his intentions to assassinate Trump, offering $150,000 to anyone successful in doing so, as RSBN previously reported.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job,” Routh wrote in the letter, according to the Justice Department on Monday.
“Everyone across the globe from the youngest to the oldest know that Trump is unfit to be anything, much less a U.S. president,” he continued. “U.S. presidents must at bare minimum embody the moral fabric that is America, and be kind, caring and selfless and always stand for humanity. Trump fails to understand any of [that].”
The attempt was the second Trump’s life in less than two months. In July, Trump’s right ear was grazed by a bullet from 20-year-old shooter Thomas Crooks during a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally.
The shooter killed on man and seriously injured two others before being eliminated by counter-sniper fire.
