With President Donald Trump’s tough immigration policies on the way, immigrants are rushing to get to the border before he takes office in January.
As Trump gets ready to crack down on illegal immigration currently overwhelming U.S. borders as a result of the Biden and Harris administration’s disastrous border policies, a new surge of migrants is scrambling to cross the border. The New York Post reported that it was only hours after President Trump was announced the winner of the 2024 elections that more than 100 migrants crossed the border across the Rio Grande River in Texas.
During his victory speech, Trump vowed to fix the borders, saying, “We’re going to have to seal up those borders, and we’re going to have to let people come into our country. We want people to come back in, but we have to let them come back in, but they have to come back in legally,”
The New York Post also reported that after President Trump’s win, another caravan of 3,000 migrants had formed in the southern Mexican town of Tapachula on Tuesday to try to get into the country. According to the New York Post, another new caravan has formed with at least 1,500 migrants in southern Mexico.
The caravan, which includes migrants mainly from Central and South America, started its 1,100-mile journey from Tapachula near the Guatemalan border. This 1,100-mile journey would take them across almost the entire expense of Mexico and take around 16 days of walking without stopping. However, this number is expected to be higher as there is a large group of children in the caravan.
Many migrants travel in these caravans due to safety in numbers, as it’s incredibly difficult for immigration agents to detain groups of hundreds of migrants. This new caravan is hoping to get through the border before the January 20 inauguration because they know President Trump’s administration will do what Biden’s failed to do – protect the borders.
Yotzeli Peña, 23, a migrant from Venezuela, told AP News, “It is going to be more difficult, that’s why we are going in hopes of getting an appointment quicker so we are able to cross before he (Trump) takes office.”
ABC News reported On Monday, President Trump confirmed that he would declare a national emergency to carry out mass deportations of migrants living in the U.S. illegally.
