Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has finally endorsed President Trump in 2024, issuing a statement just one day after the 45th president’s string of historic primary victories on Super Tuesday.
According to The New York Times, McConnell stated, “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support. During his presidency, we worked together to accomplish great things for the American people including tax reform that supercharged our economy and a generational change of our federal judiciary — most importantly, the Supreme Court.”
McConnell has long withheld his endorsement, but with President Trump’s position cemented as the prospective Republican nominee in 2024, it appears that McConnell had no other choice.
Weeks ago, the NYT reported that McConnell’s endorsement was brewing behind the scenes, and it looks like that prediction was accurate.

In response to McConnell’s long-awaited endorsement, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Thank you, Mitch. I look forward to working with you and a Republican Senate MAJORITY to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Sen. McConnell announced in late February that he would not seek reelection at the close of his Senate term in 2027. He is currently 82 years old.
According to the Associated Press, his aides have claimed that his impending Senate retirement is “unrelated to his health,” but Americans may recall that McConnell had several health issues last year, including a fall-related concussion and two public episodes of observable confusion.
Many see McConnell as part of the “Old Guard” of Republican establishment politics, so it likely comes as no surprise that he endorsed Trump only after the 45th president sealed the deal on his prospective Republican presidential nomination.
The only other Republican in the race to challenge Trump, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, dropped out of the primary race on Wednesday following a string of losses to Trump.
