New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams committed to working with President Donald Trump’s incoming border czar Tom Homan after meeting with him on Thursday.
Adams addressed the media following the meeting, emphasizing the 500,000 children who have entered the U.S. and cannot be found.
“What I’ve learned also from sitting down with [Homan] and a representative from the Biden administration that was there in the meeting as well, we have 500,000 children who have sponsors in this country that we can’t find. We can’t find them. We don’t know if they’re doing child labor. We don’t know if they’re doing sex crimes. We don’t know if they’ve been exploited. 500,000 children,” Adams said.
While Adams plans to cooperate to apprehend and deport migrant criminals fully, he made a distinction concerning other immigrants in the city.
“We’re going to protect the rights of immigrants in the city that are hard-working, giving back to the city in a real way. We’re not going to be a safe haven for those who commit repeated violent crimes,” Adams stated.
Homan said on Monday that mass deportations would begin in Chicago, a location friendly to the Biden administration’s migrant policies under Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson. He has also pushed back on Democrats who say they will oppose the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts.
In contrast, Homan met with Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and other officials at the southern border last month, where he praised Abbott’s efforts ahead of his mass deportation efforts expected after Trump takes office in January.
“Look, illegal crossings in Texas is down over 80% because of great work by Gov. Abbott. And he’s been successful because he has taken the Trump policies and put them to work,” Homan said.
“He’s put border barriers and walls up. Walls work. President Trump proved that. He has consequences. He’s arresting people and charging them that cross the border. Consequences work,” he added.
