One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting Tuesday evening at Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico, officials said.
The base near Alamogordo was placed on lockdown around 5:30 p.m. local time after reports of an active shooter, according to a statement from base officials.
“Emergency personnel are responding to the situation and there is no threat at this time,” the 49th Wing said in the statement.
The wounded individual was receiving medical treatment, authorities said. Officials have not released the identities of the person who was killed or the individual who was injured.
Authorities also have not said whether those involved in the shooting were members of the military.
No additional information about the suspected gunman or how the shooting unfolded was immediately available. Officials later lifted the lockdown after determining the 93-square-mile installation was secure.
Base officials also said the installation’s convenience store would remain closed until further notice. It was not immediately clear whether the shooting occurred at or near the store.
Holloman Air Force Base is home to the 49th Wing, a unit that supports national security missions and comprises combat-ready Airmen and Guardians.
