Hours after a second attempted assassination attempt on President Trump’s life while he was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, law enforcement held a joint press conference to release “everything” they know at this time.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said that U.S. Secret Service personnel immediately engaged a gunman at President Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course when they saw the barrel of the rifle in the shrubbery early Sunday afternoon. It was revealed later in the press conference that it is unclear whether the individual shot at Secret Service.
Bradshaw shared a photo of the items found at the scene where the suspect was hiding in the bushes, which included an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro. The sheriff estimated the individual was about 300-500 yards away from President Trump, which he noted isn’t a long distance for a rifle like that.
After Secret Service fired shots, the suspect got into a black car and jumped on I-95 toward Martin County, where he was apprehended. A witness that came forward identified the individual as the same person who was hiding in the bushes near President Trump’s property.
Notably, Bradshaw stated that Secret Service presence around President Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach was limited because he is not the sitting president. If he were currently the sitting president the course would have been surrounded by agents, said the sheriff.
Law enforcement took an individual into custody as a likely suspect and a photo will be released soon.
State Attorney for Palm Beach County Dave Aronberg stated prosecutors are working on warrants and a motion for pretrial detention for the suspect.
According to CBS, the FBI confirmed:
“The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach Florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump.”
