President Donald Trump said Thursday that his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping resulted in “enormous respect” between the two nations and a series of major agreements on trade, energy, and security that he described as “historic.”
In a statement on Truth Social following his trip to Asia, the president said the two leaders reached an understanding on key issues, including agricultural trade, rare earth minerals and fentanyl control.
“We agreed on many things, with others, even of high importance, being very close to resolved,” Trump said.
According to President Trump, Xi authorized China to begin purchasing “massive amounts” of U.S. soybeans, sorghum and other farm products. He said the move would make “our Farmers very happy” and urged them to expand production, adding, “Farmers should immediately go out and buy more land and larger tractors.”
Trump also said China committed to maintaining the flow of rare earth elements and critical minerals that are vital for American technology and defense industries. He added that Beijing pledged to help stop the movement of fentanyl into the United States, calling it a major advance in efforts to combat the nation’s drug crisis.
On energy, Trump said China plans to purchase American oil and gas, potentially through a large transaction involving the state of Alaska. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum are expected to meet with Chinese officials to discuss details of the deal.
“The agreements reached today will deliver prosperity and security to millions of Americans,” President Trump said.
The president also thanked Indo-Pacific allies, including Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam for their hospitality during his trip. He said strengthened relationships across the region are bringing “hundreds of billions of dollars” into the U.S. economy.
Trump closed his statement with characteristic optimism: “Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are being brought into our Country because of them. Our Nation is Strong, Respected, and Admired Again and, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”
The meeting also came shortly after the president announced that the U.S. intends to test nuclear weapons, following concerns with Russia and China in recent months.
