The Israel Heritage Foundation announced on Sunday that President Donald Trump will honor the victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre in Israel by visiting the grave of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson in Queens, New York.
The Monday visit will mark one of several remembrance events honoring the more than 1,200 victims lost last year and calling for the release of the hostages that remain held by Hamas.
“As the world observes the 10 days of reflection between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, President Trump’s visit highlights the significance of prayer and unity. The Rebbe’s enduring legacy inspires millions globally, promoting compassion, community service, and interfaith dialogue. His wisdom resonates with diverse leaders and individuals, transcending Jewish communities,” the foundation wrote in a statement.
“This meaningful pilgrimage offers a chance for reflection, fostering greater understanding in a polarized world. The Rebbe’s teachings emphasize unity, tolerance, and kindness, reminding us of the importance of faith and leadership,” it added.
First Lady Melania Trump also released a statement marking the Jewish New Year last week that spoke out concerning those held captive by Hamas.
“My thoughts are with those enduring the suffering of captivity. It is hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since the tragic events in Israel, where innocent lives have been destroyed,” she posted to X.
“Together, we must strive for a world grounded in compassion, empathy, and tolerance—free from terrorism,” she added.
The Israel Heritage Foundation posted in response, “The Israel Heritage Foundation Deeply moved by your message, @MelaniaTrump. May our collective efforts create a world where terrorism has no place, and every individual can live freely, with dignity. Shana Tova!”
Other American leaders have also announced plans to remember the lives lost in Israel on Oct. 7. Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbot issued a call for a statewide observance by Texans to join him in a moment of silence on Monday.
“In observance of the one-year anniversary of the horrific October 7th terrorist attacks, I ask all Texans to join me in a moment of silence to remember the men, women, and children who were brutally murdered or injured during acts of war committed by Hamas and for the seven Americans still held hostage,” Abbott said.
“Texas will always stand with the State of Israel and the Israeli people as they continue to defend their freedoms in the face of pure evil. Cecilia and I continue to pray that this war will be brought to a swift, victorious conclusion for the Jewish community and the State of Israel,” he stated.
