Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., formally announced Friday that she will run for governor of New York, saying she intends to make the state “affordable and safe for all” in a direct challenge to Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

In a post on X early Friday, Stefanik wrote, “Kathy Hochul is the Worst Governor in America. Under her failed leadership, New York is the most unaffordable state in the nation with the highest taxes, highest energy, utilities, rent, and grocery bills. When New Yorkers were looking for leadership from our Governor, she bent the knee to the raging Defund the Police, Tax Hiking Communist causing catastrophe for New York families.”

She said she is running to unite Democrats, Republicans, and independents to “save our state,” closing with, “FIRE HOCHUL. SAVE NEW YORK.”

The announcement ends months of speculation about Stefanik’s political plans and places her as the leading Republican contender to challenge Hochul in 2026. Her campaign website, eliseforgovernor.com, launched Friday with a call for donations and early support.

Stefanik, 41, represents New York’s 21st Congressional District, a largely rural area in the North Country. She was first elected to Congress in 2014 at the age of 30, making her the youngest woman ever elected to the House at the time.

She rose in national prominence as a close ally of President Donald Trump. She served as chair of the House Republican Conference during the 117th and 118th Congresses, from 2021 to 2025, making her the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House of Representatives.

A critic of Hochul, Stefanik has accused the governor of mismanaging the economy and public safety. She has said Hochul’s policies have pushed residents and businesses out of New York and has criticized the administration’s handling of the migrant crisis and changes to criminal justice laws.

Hochul, who took office in 2021 after the resignation of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and won a full term in 2022, has faced lower approval ratings amid concerns about crime and affordability. Stefanik’s campaign is expected to energize Republican voters, particularly in upstate and suburban regions where taxes, inflation, and crime are top concerns.

Her national profile and fundraising strength could make her the strongest GOP candidate for governor in several years. The race is expected to draw national attention as Republicans attempt to end two decades of Democratic control of the governor’s office in New York.
