The Biden administration is considering providing reparation payments to illegal immigrant families who were “separated during the Trump administration,” according to a shocking report from the Wall Street Journal.
Biden and the DHS have been much maligned for how they are handling immigration law enforcement and this latest report only adds fuel to the fire of the administration’s critics.
During Biden’s nine months in office, there have been 1.7 million arrests of illegal immigrants at the border, with encounters averaging over 200,000 per month.
Prior to Biden’s border crisis, the number of arrests and encounters at the southern border was falling precipitously following a 2019 spike that abated soon after Trump made a border security deal with Mexico.
And now the current administration wants to compensate a select number of illegal immigrant families who crossed the border during the Trump years.
The Biden DOJ, HHS, and DHS would provide the funds, although how they would determine who would receive the funds and how much they would distribute remains unclear.
But, the payments could be close to $1 million per family. The Wall Street Journal reported:
“The Biden administration is in talks to offer immigrant families that were separated during the Trump administration around $450,000 a person in compensation, according to people familiar with the matter, and that many families would likely get smaller payouts, depending on their circumstances, the people said.”
The considered reparations are said to be a response to class-action lawsuits filed on behalf of illegal immigrant families.
According to the same WSJ report, “Many of the families filed tort claims, a type of civil claim seeking damages for loss or harm, asking for compensation to cover mental-health treatment to address the emotional and psychological toll the practice took.”
Not surprisingly, Biden’s plan received immediate backlash.
Dozens of government officials have already spoken out against the Biden administration.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the matter in a Friday statement from his Save America PAC, “Is everybody watching the soon to be fact that the Biden Administration is going to give illegal aliens $450,000 each?”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., wrote on Twitter, “Pure insanity. The Biden administration is reportedly looking to pay $450,000 to illegal immigrants who knowingly broke the law. It’s a slap in the face to our law-abiding citizens who wake up, go to work, and pay their taxes.”
Donald Trump Jr. wrote, “Holy S**t!!! The Democrats are insane. You lost your business, your job, family members whose funerals you couldn’t attend. The IRS wants to audit you if you had $600 in your bank account the government gave you $2000, but if you’re inconvenienced coming here illegally $450,000 EACH!”
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., wrote, “Handing $450,000 to illegal aliens who broke into our country is like paying burglars to break into your home & steal from you. The Biden White House gets crazier by the day.”
Political problems continue to pile up for the Biden administration. However, many of the problems are self-inflicted wounds.
These are perilous times in the White House indeed.
