President Trump sent a celebratory message to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for conceding his fight against the Republican-led Continuing Resolution.
In a Truth Social post, the 47th president wrote, “Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took ‘guts’ and courage!”
Trump previewed future bills in the pipeline and emphasized the importance of bipartisanship. “The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation.”
He cautioned that Democrats’ failure to support future essential legislation would inevitably lead to significant consequences while highlighting the smoother outcomes a unified government could achieve. “A non pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights.”
Trump reiterated his delight in Schumer’s decision. “Again, really good and smart move by Senator Schumer. This could lead to something big for the USA, a whole new direction and beginning! DJT”
Schumer’s about-face came just one day after he claimed the Republicans did not have the votes in the Senate for the House-passed Continuing Resolution.
After his comments, a slew of old videos featuring Democrats, including Schumer, vehemently opposing government shutdowns, rapidly circulated across social media platforms.
On Thursday evening after a contentious meeting with his Democratic colleagues, Schumer announced from the Senate floor that he would vote to keep the government open.
He claimed that the bill was “very bad” but that allowing President Trump to have “much more power” during a shutdown was “a far worse option.”
Schumer appeared on MSNBC just hours later, where he referred to Republicans as “bastards” when defending his decision to support the measure.
“It’s much, much better not to be in the middle of a shutdown, which would divert people from the number one issue we have against these bastards!” Schumer exclaimed.
He claimed Republicans were “ruining democracy,” and that “they’re making the middle class pay for tax cuts for billionaires.”
According to Fox News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram, the Senate will vote to break the filibuster at 2 pm ET on Friday. The vote for the actual bill will likely come late Friday afternoon or early evening.
