President Donald Trump has ended Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, canceling an order signed by President Joe Biden that had extended her security detail beyond the standard period provided by law.
Federal law grants former vice presidents six months of protection after leaving office. Her coverage ended on July 21, but Biden quietly issued a directive in his final days in office extending her protection for an additional year, according to people familiar with the arrangement. That order, not previously disclosed, was revoked by Trump on Thursday.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the memorandum read.
The decision comes as Harris prepares for a national book tour to promote her memoir 107 Days, scheduled for release Sept. 23. The tour will mark her highest-profile public appearances since leaving office, when she largely avoided major events.
Her husband, Doug Emhoff, lost his protection in July under standard rules for a vice president’s spouse. Harris’s Los Angeles home will also no longer be guarded by federal agents, raising worries among her staff.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom was reportedly briefed on the change, though his office declined to comment on potential replacement security measures. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also criticized the move, according to CNN.
The move follows Trump’s decision in March when he issued a memo Friday rescinding the security clearances of former President Joe Biden and his entire family, former Vice President Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton.
“I have determined that it is no longer in the national interest for the following individuals to access classified information,” Trump wrote.
“I hereby direct every executive department and agency head to take all additional action as necessary and consistent with existing law to revoke any active security clearances held by the aforementioned individuals and to immediately rescind their access to classified information,” he added.
