In a stark departure from their typical interactions, President Trump has found a rare moment of agreement with Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
In a post on May 30, Sen. Warren shared a video of President Trump’s comments from the Oval Office and announced she agreed with him on the elimination of the debt ceiling.
“@realDonaldTrump and I agree: the debt limit should be scrapped to prevent an economic catastrophe,” Warren said. “Let’s pass a bipartisan bill and get rid of it forever. But jacking up the debt limit by $4 trillion to fund more tax breaks for billionaires is an outrage.”
The debt ceiling refers to the limit placed on the Treasury for borrowing money to pay off the federal government’s debts. The prospect of defaulting on federal debt has been a tool used by both parties in budget negotiations.
Trump responded to Warren on Wednesday with his post signaling agreement on the issue.
“I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING,” Trump said. “The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe.”
Trump continued by expressing his concerns about the politicization of the debt ceiling and stating his hope that the issue could garner bipartisan support.
‘It is too devastating to be put in the hands of political people that may want to use it despite the horrendous effect it could have on our Country and, indirectly, even the World,” Trump said. “As to Senator Warren’s second statement on the $4 Trillion Dollars, I like that also, but it would have to be done over a period of time, as short as possible. Let’s get together, Republican and Democrat, and DO THIS!”
