President Trump responded Tuesday to reports of a tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan on Monday evening, leaving at least four dead, including an NYPD police officer, in a midtown building on Park Avenue.
“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence.”
Monday night’s incident unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, when an individual armed with a rifle opened fire inside a building on the ground floor and again on the 33rd floor, NBC reported.
The alleged shooter, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, died by suicide, per the outlet.
“My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York!” Trump continued in his statement.
According to NBC, Tamura appears to have traveled across the country to reach Manhattan, as his vehicle allegedly passed through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before crossing into New York.
It is unclear what the alleged shooter’s motive was.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters late Monday night that the officer killed in the shooting, Didarul Islam, was a husband and a father. His wife was pregnant with their third child, she said.
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do, he put himself in harm’s way, he made the ultimate sacrifice,” Tisch stated. “Shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city. He died as he lived – a hero.”
FBI Director Kash Patel honored Officer Islam’s sacrifice early Monday morning, writing, “Please join the @FBI in praying for his family, friends, and colleagues he leaves behind. We will offer them our full support. Honor our fallen.”
