President Donald Trump’s senior advisor, Jason Miller, sat down for an interview with Howard Kurtz on Sunday to discuss issues relating to the campaign. Miller addressed topics including Trump’s policy agenda, the likelihood that Joe Biden will remain the Democratic Party nominee, and the process for Trump’s upcoming decision on selecting a VP.
Kurtz asked Miller if the Trump campaign’s indication that a VP selection might be announced this week was a distraction in case the debate had not gone well.
“No, not at all,” said Mr. Miller. “This is my third time working for President Trump on the campaign trail. There is one person who’s going to pick the VP, and that’s going to be President Trump.”
Miller continued to explain the possible timing of the announcement. “It could be tomorrow on Truth Social. It could be during the convention. It could be anywhere between now and then.”
President Trump has indicated that the decision has been made, even though it is not yet public knowledge. The list of possible contenders includes several worthy options who would make a strong running mate for Trump in the November election.
In his interview with Miller, Kurtz addressed media speculation that the list has been narrowed down to three contenders. Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., have been touted in the media as the finalists in the selection process.
Miller stressed that President Trump has spoken highly of all three individuals, but the decision is still unknown. “Until he actually says it…speculation is just speculation,” he said.
Trump’s advisor also discussed what the 45th president would consider to be the most important factor in choosing a running mate.
“Whoever he picks will be someone he is confident could step in and lead if they ever need to. That is the most important thing in selecting a VP,” Miller said.
The Trump team has also stressed the importance of leadership qualities in a VP pick for someone who can carry on after President Trump’s second term concludes.
