President Donald Trump this week took a swing at far-left Democrat NYC mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, stating that if he should become the next leader of the world’s most famous city, he wouldn’t hesitate to “arrest him” if he stands in the way of ICE operations.
Trump’s statement came after a reporter asked him what his response was to Mamdani’s recent speech promising to resist ICE operations in New York should he win the general election.
“Well, then we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump said simply.
Mamdani’s win in New York was an upset, and his political statements have strongly smacked of Marxist undertones, drawing criticism from many conservatives.
On Wednesday, Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“As President of the United States, I’m not going to let this Communist Lunatic destroy New York. Rest assured, I hold all the levers, and have all the cards. I’ll save New York City, and make it ‘Hot’ and ‘Great’ again, just like I did with the Good Ol’ USA!”
Mamdani fired back with a statement of his own, claiming that if he was elected mayor, he would “refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.”
He also described Trump’s criticisms as an “attack on our democracy.”
“Someone should remind [Mamdani] that impeding law enforcement officers from enforcing immigration law is a federal crime. No one is above the law, Zohran!” wrote Turning Point USA President Charlie Kirk.
“Just in case you were not convinced by my analysis that Mamdani is a hardcore Marxist . . . Here is one of his prior declarations: ‘We will slowly buy up the housing on the private market and convert properties into communes[,]’” wrote legal scholar Jonathan Turley this week on X.
He added in his analysis, “Mamdani is a serious Marxist and that should concern anyone in New York City.”
Whether Mamdani’s past stated intent to seize “the means of production” qualifies him as a Marxist or Communist may be up for debate, per Turley, but one thing is certain: he openly opposes capitalism and appears to strongly favor the redistribution of wealth, two hallmarks of socialist doctrine.
