President Donald Trump pitched a unique new idea on Thursday that could capitalize on the political momentum of the MAGA movement.
The president floated the concept of holding a national convention for the Republican Party before the 2026 midterm elections next fall, noting how well the GOP has performed over the past year.
“We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” he wrote in a statement on Truth Social.
He continued, “We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper.”
According to Axios, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has approximately $65 million less cash on hand than the Republican National Committee (RNC), largely due to the party’s ongoing campaign expenses from Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful 2024 presidential bid.
“Some donors and senior Democrats are angry that Harris’ campaign spent an unprecedented $1.5 billion during her 15-week run and still lost all seven swing states,” the report noted.
Republicans reportedly have more than $80 million as of the end of July, and with President Trump’s administration working overtime to implement his America First agenda, the wind appears to be in the GOP’s sails.
“In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms,” Trump wrote. “It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”
The Republican National Convention dates back to 1856, shortly after the Republican Party was formed. In 1860, Republican Abraham Lincoln won the party’s nomination, going on to become the first Republican President of the United States.
The convention has traditionally been held as a quadrennial event fronting a presidential election cycle – not the midterms.
