Trump’s law-and-order coalition targets Wikipedia bias in defense of free speech

President Trump’s law-and-order coalition of Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has launched an investigation to root out bias in Wikipedia entries.

The Hill reported that Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), chair of the panel’s subcommittee on cybersecurity, information technology, and government innovation, sent out an information request to Wikipedia’s Maryana Iskander. In the letter, the Republicans had written, “ Multiple studies and reports have highlighted efforts to manipulate information on the Wikipedia platform for propaganda aimed at Western audiences.”

The letter referred to recent reports about coordinated campaigns that manipulated content related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The letter also read, “A second investigation detailed actions by hostile nation-state actors to expose Western audiences to pro-Kremlin and anti-Western messaging by manipulating Wikipedia articles and other news outlets relied on for training AI chatbots.”

The lawmakers had specifically requested information regarding the tools and methods that Wikipedia has used to identify and stop harmful content that injects bias. According to The Hill, this also includes documents and records related to the use of foreign actors to disseminate propaganda.

However, this isn’t the first time Wikipedia has come under fire for promoting biased content and propaganda to Americans. Breitbart reported earlier in April that former Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ed Martin, accused the Wikimedia Foundation of violating its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by allowing misinformation from foreign actors onto its platform.

“Wikipedia is permitting information manipulation on its platform, including the rewriting of key, historical events and biographical information of current and previous American leaders, as well as other matters implicating the national security and the interests of the United States,” said Martin.

In the weeks leading up to the 2024 election, Wikipedia worked hard to publish left-wing biased content that accused President Trump of being a fascist. In fact, Breitbart reported that a 2024 report from the Manhattan Institute was released, showing that Wikipedia entries are more likely to associate negative sentiment with right-leaning information. This investigation into this bias and propaganda is an example of how President Trump inspires his administration to defend Americans’ freedom of speech.
