Tucker Carlson called out Texas Governor Greg Abbott while speaking at an event this weekend, stating that the governor’s actions regarding the border crisis are a “criminal act” and that he is a “liar.”

“How many Texans do you think are all on board with letting seven million people cross into their state illegally? What percentage? Zero,” Carlson stated to a crowd in Utica, Michigan, on Sunday.

“It’s not just frustrating, it’s a betrayal of the poor promise of the country, which is the people rule. That’s a criminal act,” Carlson said.

Illegal crossings have been a massive issue for the Texas border since 2021. However, this year, the state took a major hit as Title 42, an emergency public health order that allowed the U.S. to expel migrants quickly, expired.

Border towns like Brownsville, Laredo, and El Paso had all declared states of emergency before the policy expired to prepare for the thousands of migrants that would come. In response to the emergency, Abbott deployed a specifically designed barrier made of buoys down the Rio Grande, a hot spot for crossing.

“We’re securing the border at the border,” Abbott said, according to The Texas Tribune. “What these buoys will allow us to do is prevent people from getting to the border.”

In addition to the buoys, the state sent police and military officers to patrol the border, added razor wire fencing, allowed troopers to arrest migrants for trespassing, and began to bus migrants to sanctuary cities

However, Carlson criticized the move, stating that when he had talked to the governor about why the problem was still progressing, Abbott stated that it was a “complicated” situation. Carlson refuted this, though, and said that the issue was not “complicated.” Carlson claimed the issue cold be solved “in a week” by assembling the National Guard.

“He refuses to do that. He won’t do it,” Carlson told the crowd. “And it’s not like no one suggested it. I’ve suggested to him three times, including in private at a cocktail party in Dallas last year. ‘What are you doing, man? Don’t you have a National Guard? Why don’t you seal the border?’”

Abbott has not yet publicly responded to Carlson’s comments.
