Vice President JD Vance met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Paris on Tuesday during a trip to the European AI Summit.

The two leaders reportedly discussed diversifying India’s energy sources, among other topics, ahead of Modi’s planned visit to the White House later this week.

“The two leaders, along with the Second Lady of the United States Usha Vance, enjoyed coffee together and discussed topics of mutual interest, including how the United States can assist India in diversifying its energy sourcing through investments in clean, reliable U.S. nuclear technology,” the White House said.

Modi is expected to discuss potential tariff cuts with Trump in Washington, though the two will likely also address recent deportations of Indian illegal immigrants back to their home nation.

Last week, a U.S. Air Force plane carrying over 100 Indian migrants landed in India, according to a report from Newsmax.

“As part of India-US migration and mobility cooperation, both sides are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration, while also creating more avenues for legal migration from India to the US,” India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

The U.S. is India’s largest trading partner, according to Reuters, with $118 billion in two-way trade in 2023. India is also the world’s fifth-largest economy and surpassed China in 2023 as the world’s most-populated nation, with over 1.42 billion people.

Trump previously spoke with Modi in a call on Jan. 27, which the White House called “productive.”

“The two leaders discussed expanding and deepening cooperation. They also discussed a range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. The President emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trading relationship,” the readout stated.

“The leaders discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House, underscoring the strength of the friendship and strategic ties between our nations. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to advance the U.S.-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India hosting Quad Leaders for the first time later this year,” it added.
