Senate Democrats are refusing to work with Republicans on a Continuing Resolution on Wednesday as a government shutdown deadline approaches.
The current temporary spending plan is set to end Friday at midnight, leaving the Senate less than two days to work out a solution.
“Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR,” Schumer told reporters, according to Newsmax.
“Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their continuing resolution without any input — any input — from congressional Democrats. Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.
The House passed a Continuing Resolution this week by a slim majority. All Republicans except Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie supported the Trump-backed effort. All Democrats except one rejected it.
The Senate requires at least 60 votes among the 100 senators to pass the Continuing Resolution. Republicans hold 53 seats, with Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul a likely “no” vote.
Democrats are instead pushing for a one-month bill to avoid agreeing with many of the Trump-supported budgetary changes supporting his America First agenda.
House Speaker Mike Johnson called out Democrats over the party’s lack of support on Tuesday, arguing that they opposed government shutdowns in the past but now refuse to work together for the American people.
“Democrats have railed against government shutdowns. But now they’re supporting one. What’s changed? They’re willing to do ANYTHING to stop President Trump from implementing his agenda,” Johnson posted to X.
Trump also blasted Massie in a social media post due to the congressman’s lack of GOP support.
“Congressman Thomas Massie, of beautiful Kentucky, is an automatic ‘NO’ vote on just about everything, despite the fact that he has always voted for Continuing Resolutions in the past. HE SHOULD BE PRIMARIED, and I will lead the charge against him. He’s just another GRANDSTANDER, who’s too much trouble, and not worth the fight. He reminds me of Liz Cheney before her historic, record breaking fall (loss!). The people of Kentucky won’t stand for it, just watch,” Trump wrote.
