NYC to Require Vaccine Passports for Indoor Restaurants, Gyms, and Shows

Becoming the first in the United States to do so, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday that New York City residents will be required to show proof of vaccination for indoor dining, gyms, and shows.

Residents will be required to show the “Key to NYC Pass” starting on Aug. 16. Enforcement will begin on Sept. 13.

“If you’re unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in many things,” said Mayor de Blasio about the new vaccine passport.

This announcement follows last week’s incentive to pay NYC residents $100 in cash to get vaccinated.

“We’re now at this point that we’ve dreamed of, and we’re going to go even farther with a smart mix of incentives and mandates,” Mayor de Blasio said.

There will be multiple ways to show proof of vaccination, including paper cards, the Excelsior Pass, and the city’s NYC Covid Safe app. New York City is the first city in the United States to require vaccine passports for residents.
