President Donald Trump on Thursday participated in a special event at the White House heralding the critical importance of passing the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” holding GOP lawmakers’ feet to the fire while utilizing the stories of incredible Americans to fortify his call to get the legislation codified.
The president called the OBBB “one of the most important pieces of legislation in the history of our country,” noting that the bill, if passed, will “secure our borders, turbocharge our economy and bring back the American dream.”
He championed the bill – which faces a Republican deadline of July 4 to reach the president’s desk – as an opportunity to create more jobs than ever and reduce the tax burden on everyday Americans by doing the following: creating 7 million jobs (at least), adding 3.1 percent to economic growth, and reducing taxes for Americans by around 15 percent.
“The day I sign this bill most every major promise made in the 2024 campaign already will have become a promise kept – promises made, promises kept,” he said.
The event showcased the stories of incredible Americans – like a mother who worked as a DoorDash driver and a family from Philadelphia who would benefit from proposed tax relief in the OBBB – made a great case for Republicans who may be waffling on voting for the bill.
Bringing working-class Americans was a stroke of strategic genius, breathing practical life into the theoretical concepts proposed in the OBBB, such as the elimination of taxes on tips (which would help DoorDash drivers and other service-based employees) and the elimination of taxes on overtime (helpful for law enforcement officers and many other hardworking Americans).
“We’re going to stop the largest tax hike in history,” he said, warning of a potential 68 percent tax increase nationwide otherwise.
The OBBB, Trump noted, would also make the Trump Tax Cuts from his first term permanent and expand the existing child tax credit.
“The One Big Beautiful Bill will also be an incredible victory for American farmers,” Trump said. “…Our bill will provide 100 percent expensing so [farmers] can buy a new farm, new farm equipment.”
He also touted the proposed elimination of the infamous “death tax,” which often undermines family farms.
Another big moment for President Trump was when he highlighted his vision to empower “thousands of families to choose the public private…religious, or homeschool of their choice.” He emphasized the importance of providing tax relief and how that ties into facilitating financial stability for families.
“With the One Big Beautiful Bill, we’re delivering both,” he said.
Other highlights from the event included:
- Trump recognized a third-generation Michigan autoworker who would benefit from the OBBB by making interest payments on car purchases completely tax-deductible,
- Trump invited Border Czar Tom Homan to speak about the importance of codifying critical border security measures in the OBBB, which would hire thousands of new Border Patrol and ICE agents, complete border wall construction, and allocate funding for the deportation of at least one million illegal aliens per year,
- “The Big Beautiful Bill should be nonpartisan,” Homan said in his remarks,
- Trump highlighted an Angel Father whose daughter, Katie, was killed in a car accident by an illegal alien. “We’re always going to remember the memory of Katie,” the president said,
- Trump said the “typical overtime worker” in America will take home around $1,500 every year with the elimination of taxes on overtime.
Perhaps the most common-sense moment of the event was when Tom Homan blasted Congress for playing political games about passing the legislation, remarking, “What the hell’s the matter with everybody up in Congress?”
He emphasized the need to get more “bad guys” off the street, increase seizures of fentanyl, and put a total halt to the sex trafficking of women and children at the border.
President Trump even invited Border Patrol President Paul Perez to say a few words.
Perez said, “President Trump made promises that he has kept. Now it’s time for Congress to back him up. We need to end the [chaos] and recklessness that Biden allowed into this country.”
