President Trump enhances national security with proposed social media vetting for immigrants

President Trump’s administration continues to tighten security by proposing a new policy that uses social media vetting for immigrants under his executive order “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats.”

Breitbart reports that a notice from the Federal Register announced that a new social media surveillance policy has been proposed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to comply with President Trump’s executive order protecting the country from all kinds of foreign and national security threats. The policy will require people applying for green cards, U.S. citizenship, refugee status and asylum to disclose their social media accounts to the U.S. government.

This proposed policy is President Trump’s effort to modernize the immigration system while making sure that all immigrants entering the country are thoroughly vetted and screened. So far, his efforts have already seen incredible results, and RSBN reported that this year there were only 8,326 border encounters compared to last year’s 189,913.

Newsweek reports that a USCIS spokesperson told the news outlet that reviewing social media accounts would go a long way in strengthening fraud detection and protecting national security. USCIS also predicts that this new policy will apply to at least 2.5 million immigrants, and Newsweek reports that some people applying for visas outside of the country have already been asked for information about their social media accounts. But this is not required for all applicants.

In their proposal on the Federal Register, USCIS had written, “ This data will be collected from certain populations of individuals on applications for immigration-related benefits and is necessary for the enhanced identity verification, vetting and national security screening and, inspection conducted by USCIS and required under the E.O. [executive order]”

For now, this proposal would be applied to people already in the country seeking permanent residency.

There is a 60-day window ending on May 5 for the public to comment on this proposed policy. This policy is part of President Trump’s plan to secure the country, and Vice President JD Vance says President Trump will “bring safety BACK to America.”
