President Donald Trump released a statement criticizing Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Wednesday after withdrawing his endorsement of Brooks in his U.S. Senate race.
Trump emphasized his opposition to Mitch McConnell’s continued role as the Republican Party’s Senate Minority Leader, saying, “As far as Mitch McConnell, I am not a fan and there’s been no harsher critic than me.”
“He has been absolutely terrible and very bad for the GOP,” Trump continued, “The sooner he leaves ‘Leadership,’ the better off the Republican Party will be.”
The 45th president’s most recent comments build upon the frustration he has expressed with McConnell over the past year, as McConnell as repeatedly sided with the Democrats and abandoned America First policies.
In February, Trump claimed, “Mitch McConnell does not speak for the Republican Party, and does not represent the views of the vast majority of its voters.”
Trump has publicly expressed criticism against McConnell numerous times since the 2020 election. The 45th president has even encouraged other Republican senators to challenge McConnell for Senate majority leader if Republicans retake the Senate in the midterms.
McConnell has had multiple disagreements with Trump over spending packages, caving to the Democrats and raising the debt ceiling, and denying evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
With Republicans in a solid position to retake the Senate in the midterms, Trump has urged Republicans to consider choosing a stronger America First senator to lead the chamber’s Republicans.
