Proving his powerful influence within the Republican Party base, President Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate for Michigan’s gubernatorial election, Tudor Dixon, won the Republican nomination Tuesday night.
The Associated Press called the race in favor of Dixon with a lead of 41 percent, and roughly 19 percent of the vote counted, Fox News reports.
Dixon secured President Trump’s endorsement one day before the election, handing her an edge against her Republican counterparts.
“Tudor Dixon is a conservative warrior,” Trump stated in his endorsement, adding that she would make “a great Governor” and “not let you down!”
Dixon will now face off against Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who was heavily criticized for the state’s Covid-19 lockdown policies, as previously reported. Whitmer ran unopposed in the Democrat primary.
“We will never forget what Gretchen Whitmer did when she put Covid patients in nursing homes,” Dixon tweeted, vowing to hold Whitmer “accountable” if elected.
