Trump sets his sights on making America the reigning global superpower in AI technology

President Donald Trump declared this week that America’s “destiny is to dominate every industry” in the world, including the tech frontier of artificial intelligence, which is quickly becoming the most prevalent tool on earth.

“We’re here today because we believe that America’s destiny is to dominate every industry and be the first in every technology, and that includes being the world’s number one superpower in artificial intelligence,” he said on Tuesday, during a roundtable at the Pennsylvania Energy & Innovation Summit.

AI tech has rapidly moved to dominate American and global markets. Just this week, Trump’s Department of Defense announced a multi-million-dollar contract with Elon Musk’s xAI, which will establish a suite of AI tools called “Grok For Government.”

“This includes frontier AI like Grok 4, our latest and most advanced model so far, which brings strong reasoning capabilities with extensive pretraining models,” the company said in a statement. “Our government partnerships will also bring to bear tools like Deep Search, Tool Use, and more integrations – all of which are industry-leading commercial products.”

To power AI, the energy grid will need expansion. Trump spoke about this during his comments in Pennsylvania, noting that he was told the United States would need “double” the power grid it has now.

President Trump said that the investments announced Tuesday afternoon – $92 billion from 20 major companies – included over $56 billion in “new energy infrastructure” and $36 billion in “new data center projects.”

Additionally, Trump highlighted the Homer City Power Plant, which was decommissioned and closed under the Biden administration.

“I’m pleased to report that with a $15 billion investment from Knighthead Capital Management, the Home City site is being resurrected as the largest natural gas-fired power plant ever in North America,” he announced.
