President Ronald Reagan left an indelible mark on American history, and it looks as if the 40th president’s life will finally be told on the silver screen through the talent of actor Dennis Quaid.
This week, the film’s official trailer was released online. It features Quaid as Reagan, Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan, Lesley-Ann Down as Margaret Thatcher, and former Disney star David Henrie as the younger version of Reagan. Jon Voight is also included in the film’s credits as Viktor Petrovich, an ex-KGB agent.
The movie will tell the story of the former president’s rise from charming Hollywood actor to California governor and eventually to the 40th President of the United States.
The trailer for the biopic also comes amid a historic moment for another Republican president. On Thursday, 45th President Donald Trump rallied tens of thousands in the South Bronx of New York.
A Republican presidential candidate has not won the state of New York since 1984, when President Reagan captured those blue-state votes.
The film starring Quaid will also heavily focus on the threat of communism and the Soviet Union that President Reagan faced during his time in office. According to the National Review, “Reagan” is heavily based on a book written by Paul Kengor, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism.
Kengor is also well-known for his other high-profile books, such as The Devil and Karl Marx, A Pope and a President, and God and Ronald Reagan: A Spiritual Life.
Quaid recently told podcast host and intellectual psychologist Jordan Peterson that Reagan was a “badass” and noted that he was “my favorite president,” via Fox News.
He added, “Reagan, who had always been, you know, this kind of cold warrior and great communicator, came along and told people, ‘Pick yourself up,’ you know? ‘There’s a brighter day ahead.’”
“Reagan” will open in theaters on August 30, 2024.
