A Georgia Court of Appeals has disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her team from prosecuting President Donald Trump in the Georgia election inference case.
Last year, President Trump and several others were indicted in the Southern state for supposedly trying to undo the 2020 election results. According to the Associated Press, the nearly 100-page indictment included multiple brazen accusations against Trump.
At the time, Willis explained in a late-night conference, “The indictment alleges that rather than abide by Georgia’s legal process for election challenges, the defendants engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia’s presidential election result,”
The case, which, according to ABC News House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, called politically motivated, got off to a rocky start as the AP reported that the day the indictment was issued, a mysterious posting appeared on the county website listing criminal charges that were being brought against President Trump.
President Trump’s legal team called out the leak, saying, “The events that have unfolded today have been shocking and absurd, starting with the leak of a presumed and premature indictment before the witnesses had testified or the grand jurors had deliberated and ending with the District Attorney being unable to offer any explanation.”
Now, months later, the Georgia Court of Appeals has given Willis and her team no authority to proceed with the case. Fox News reported that the filing states, “After carefully considering the trial court’s findings in its order, we conclude that it erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office.”
The filing also stated, “no other remedy will suffice to restore public confidence in the integrity of these proceedings.”
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Trump shared his thoughts on the case, saying the “whole case has been a disgrace to justice.” It must be noted that while Willis and her team were dismissed, the court did not toss out the case entirely. The AP reported that it is up to the Council of Georgia to choose another prosecutor, and further delays can even be expected if Willis decides to appeal the judgment.
Trump told Fox News, “The case has to be thrown out because it was started corruptly by an incompetent prosecutor who received millions of dollars through her boyfriend.”
He added, “Therefore, the case is entirely dead. Everybody should receive an apology, including those wonderful patriots who have been caught up in this for years.”
