Mainstream media news is FAILING, metrics suggest

by Summer Lane

2021 doesn’t appear to have been great year for the mainstream news industry, according to the metrics available from cable news networks and established news giants like The New York Times.

According to a report from the Associated Press, CNN’s weekday daytime viewership dropped a staggering 38 percent, along with Fox News, who dropped 34 percent.

In the wake of a hotly contested 2020 presidential election, which 71 percent of Republicans believe to be illegitimate thanks to widespread reports of voter fraud and irregularities, cable news and mainstream newspapers seem to have lost their impact.

As the mainstream media has carried the narrative that the election was “safe and secure” despite staggering evidence that suggests otherwise, Americans seem to be turning a deaf ear to the cultural narrative being echoed on nearly every channel and newspaper column.

The media’s bias while covering incidents such as the sensationalized trial of Kyle Rittenhouse or the now-debunked staged “hate crime” from Jussie Smollett only continued to erode viewers’ trust in news reporting on major networks.

According to an October 2021 Gallup poll, Americans’ trust in the media has sunk to the second lowest on record, with only 36 percent of citizens reporting that they have a “great deal” of trust in mass media.

Further, the Associated Press reported that when President Trump was in the White House, the subscription rates for the New York Times and Washington Post exploded.

However, the Washington Post has reported a 44 percent decrease in unique visitors since November 2020, highlighting the public’s interest in two things: President Donald Trump and the disputed presidential election.

In the latest U.S. poll conducted by Susquehanna Polling and Research, they found that 70 percent of Americans say that they don’t think corporate media is truthful.

These metrics and polls, combined with the catastrophic allegations and reports of election fraud that occurred during the 2020 presidential election, all seem to suggest that the American public are well aware of the negative and divisive narratives that appear to be pushed by major mainstream news networks, and they are tuning it out.
