Donald Trump on Sunday raised the possibility of impeachment for Hakeem Jeffries after the New York Democrat criticized the U.S. Supreme Court over a recent ruling.
In a post on Truth Social, he responded to Jeffries’ remarks about the court’s decision in a Louisiana redistricting case.
“Hakeem Jeffries, a Low IQ individual, said our Supreme Court is ‘illegitimate.’ After saying such a thing, isn’t he subject to Impeachment?” President Trump wrote. “I got impeached for A PERFECT PHONE CALL. Where are you Republicans? Why not get it started? They’ll be doing this to me!”
In another post on Sunday, the president commented on state elections affected by the Supreme Court’s ruling on redistricting in Louisiana. The state has paused its primary to make adjustments, while additional states may require rescheduling.
“We cannot allow there to be an Election that is conducted unconstitutionally simply for the ‘convenience’ of State Legislatures. If they have to vote twice, so be it. We should demand that State Legislatures do what the Supreme Court says must be done,” President Trump posted.
“That is more important than administrative convenience. The byproduct is that the Republicans will receive more than 20 House Seats in the upcoming Midterms!” he continued.
Jeffries had criticized the court following its decision involving congressional district maps and the Voting Rights Act.
“Today’s decision by this illegitimate Supreme Court majority … is designed to undermine the ability of communities of color all across this country,” Jeffries said in a statement, calling the outcome “unacceptable” but “not unexpected.”
The Supreme Court’s ruling addressed how states can draw congressional districts and the extent to which race may be considered under federal law, an issue that remains central to ongoing legal battles over redistricting nationwide.
Jeffries referred to the president’s comment as “Jeffries Derangement Syndrome” in a post to X.
